Poor Little Heart!

April 23rd, 2009 ; Author - Monika

Nestled, quite literally, in the center of Crosby Street in downtown NYC, there is the Housing Works Bookstore Cafe. One day, a few years back, I stumbled in to get away from the rain for a while and ended up settling at one of the wooden tables with a cupcake and a cup of tea from the Cafe at the back.

Spider Man; The Musical?

April 13th, 2009 ; Author - Channon, Entertainment

The good news is that even awful ideas can get us all strangely excited! Julie Taymor is going to be directing 2010’s Spider Man the Musical! You know her from the Lion King, Across the Universe, and other more illustrious and intelligent fair.  Music and lyrics come care of Bono and the Edge (um, yeah. I just said it). Gossip on the street is that she’s getting 40 million dollars towards special effects and people will be flocking for tickets instead of continuing to spend $125 per ticket for Wicked (it’s on YOU TUBE, people!).

I’m thinking this is a job for Zac Effron. Or can we safely assume that Tobey Maguire can sing? Then again, maybe we should just go the safe route and give it to someone who’ll slam dunk it - yes…I’m speaking of the HUGH Jackman.

According to the February Manhattan Rental Market Report (I betcha didn’t know there was one of those), rents are declining across Manhattan. The biggest drop is in studio apartments in doorman buildings which are listing at 8% below last year’s price.

I’m thinking this is great news until a hand comes out of nowhere, smacks me on the cheek and demands, “When will you ever be able to afford a studio apartment in a doorman building in Manhattan? You think you LIVE in Gossip Girl? You think you can find Carrie’s $700 rent stabilized one-bedroom brownstone apartment in REAL LIFE? What up, WAITRESS?!”

Anyhoo-

They list several good news stories, including Erika and Clark. They’re a couple who’d been somehow sharing an $1800 studio in the East Village on Avenue B…. [Read more →]

Cake Walking

March 25th, 2009 ; Author - Monika, Food

Once a month, at the beginning of the month, Bruce from Walking Tours Manhattan hosts a Dessert Fest walking tour of different parts of the city. It’s free, and all he really asks is 1$ donation that’s 100% for charity.  This month he did the dessert shops of Harlem. Since I live in the neighborhood I figured I should at least know where all the sweet shops were, that way I could find them when I need them…or avoid them when I need them. (HA!)
