Unicorns Had to Come From Somewhere

June 22nd, 2008 ; Author - Chocoholism, Random

Yup, maybe they do exist. Or did, or possibly still could.

Last week a deer with a single horn in the center of its head was spotted in a nature reserve in Italy. The weird thing – the first thing I thought when I read about it was not “oh wow”, but “they are nature reserves in Italy?”

There are, and apparently they are the kind of nature reserves that house special animals with mythical genetic anomalies.

Long live Unicorn, the one-year old deer! That’s good news for myths and people with imaginations everywhere!

Mystery Solved - 75 Years Later

June 22nd, 2008 ; Author - Chocoholism, Random

What caused the death of my favorite horse has always been a little bit of a question mark.

Was he poisoned? Was his feed moldy? Since Phar Lap’s death in 1932 there have been many theories. The Australian horse had won 37 out of his 51 starts and had captured the hearts of the nation. Unfortunately that also meant that he was a threat to the members of the racing association – he was eating away at their earnings. With the numbers of enemies mounting, his owners decided that it would be best for him to leave Australia; they entered him in the Agua Caliente Handicap in Mexico. He won that race, destined to be his last, and mysteriously died days later.

Last week, researchers used six of hairs to prove that within 40 hours of the Phar Lap’s death he had consumed a massive quantity of arsenic.

However, while we now know the cause, half of the question mark remains – was it accidental or was it murder?

Polly Wanna Cracker?

June 1st, 2008 ; Author - Chocoholism, Random

Not sure if a cracker got Mr. Yosuke Nakamura to pony up, but pony up he did – to the vet.

The parrot, who had been missing from his house for two weeks had kept mum with the police, but after a few days with a vet he revealed his name and his address.

The Nakamura family had been trying to teach their parrot those details for two years; apparently they knew about his propensity for escaping his cage. Wonder if they had trained him not to speak to the police.

Good news for Yosuke and proof that teaching parrots to speak can actually useful!
