How and Why To Look Busier at Work

March 22nd, 2009 ; Author - Channon, life

Nowadays, we all realize that we really need our jobs. But…do our jobs really need us?

According to CBS Sunday Morning, we spend about 2 and 1/2 hours of every 8 hour workday doing nothing special…in fact…you’re probably doing nothing right now by reading this blog (thanks for stopping in! You are Special to US). You don’t want your boss to realize that you’re expendable…so you’ve got to at least LOOK LIKE YOU’RE BUSY Even when you’re NOT.

Step in Drew Satee - the “looking busy coach” who runs workshops on how to look busier. This past Sunday he taught Bill Geist and the rest of us us all how to look like we’re necessary:

  1. When doodling…never LOOK like you’re doodling. Always doodle with a concentrated facial expression. Occasionally look up and down to look like you’re confused.
  2. Utilize the “Send Later” function on your emails. If stepping out to lunch, or taking a nap in the private handicapped bathroom, schedule your emails to send themselves out at 20 minute increments. (make sure to CC many, many people, like your boss)
  3. Use a cluttered desktop to build a wall around your computer or doodle pad. This makes you look over-worked and keeps people from seeing your doodles. (I know a few people who’ve already mastered this technique!)                   Bill Geist's Desk at CBS Sunday Morning
