May 10th, 2010 ; Author - Channon, Food

Fried Polenta by Tina

Fried Polenta by Tina

Ah- sometimes I find myself just not having the time or inclination to be creative and newsworthy. That’s when I gravitate towards the boundless energy of very good friends - just try it yourself and relieve yourself of non-productive guilt.

Check out this beautiful website created by my zany, energetic, creative and fun-loving friend Tina. This food site goes beyong the average with stories, feelings, and everything you need to know to create 3 new recipes a week. (many of which have been tried and tasted by yours truly! lucky me)

Tina’s Nom Noms - yum, yum, yum, yum….

…nom…nom..nom…

…yum…yum…yum…

Julie and Julia - Review and Why Cry when you’ve Got Love?

August 27th, 2009 ; Author - Channon, Entertainment, Food

I Watch Stuff.comI’ve been awaiting Julie and Julia since I first heard about it a year ago. Food, Love, Writing, Julia Child - it’s like Nora Ephron read my 12 year old dreams and created this movie just for me. And I’d like to thank her for all the great food porn and the shots of Paris in the 50s. She even borrowed some of Julia Child’s kitchen to put you right smack in the world of French Food in the mid-century.

And for the Julia Child part of the story - I think anyone will find an inspirational and lovely little piece. But the modern day story left me unsatisfied, despite some smart moments and the immensely adorable boyfriend played by Chris Messina. (there’s a slight chance you’ll remember him from Vicky Christina Barcelona)

Julie and Julia is 2 stories side by side - the story of Julia Child and her ascent to bringing french cuisine to the common housewife, and Julie - who spent her 20s writing a half-written novel no one wanted to publish before spending her days talking to 9/11 asthma victims from a cubicle.

You’ll be awfully surprised, as I was, to find out that Julia Child didn’t marry until she was almost 40 years old (she blames her height - so do I JULIA! So…do…I…). [Read more →]

Blockbuster Movie Tie-ins

May 28th, 2009 ; Author - Nothingjerk, Entertainment, Food, Plain Strange

Every summer the Big Movie releases have endorsements and tie-ins. My favorite of all time was probably 711 remodeling a bunch of their stores to look like Qwik E Marts for the Simpson’s movie. The lamest was probably the “Dark Knight Pizza” from Papa Johns with Extra pepperoni to make the pizza darker (I’m not kidding).

This year of course has similar tie-ins Terminator: Salvation has a tie-in with 711 for an “Apocalyptic Ice” Slurpee (not a joke either, that’s real). X-Men Origins: Wolverine had a Papa John’s Pizza tie-in with “X-tra Cheese”. But what comes next? There are quite a few movies coming out this summer ripe for tie-ins like:

The Angels and Demons Pizza Hut “Papal Pizza” with extra Mushrooms and Pepperoni

Where the Wild Things Are and Duracell batteries in child locators

Drag Me to Hell and Verizon Wireless; “Can You Hear Me Now?” “Yes” “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH”

Inglorious Bastards 711 tie-in with a “Bastardly Berry” Slurpee

Public Enemies Orbitz flavor “Tommy Gum” mmm taste the gun oil and whiskey

Year One giant “Mammoth Burger” from Burger King (this one sounds like it could be legit)

and of course

2012 “End of the World” Sandwich “7 layers of bacon and cheese wrapped in roast beef and served in a bucket of ranch dressing”.

I should work in Movie Marketing I’m a Genius!!

Thingamajig: The Whatchamacallit’s Limited Edition Sister

April 20th, 2009 ; Author - Nothingjerk, Food, Random, There's Still Hope

So those of you who know me may know I have a bit of a sweeWatchamacallitt tooth on occasion.
Not just that but in my workplace I’m a successful candy dispenser with the aid of my trusty Batman-head Halloween bucket. So because of this I get to see a lot of different candy out there.

I am always in the candy isle looking for deals and seeing what’s new. There have been some good new products out there but rarely am I actually excited about one when I see or hear about it. Yesterday I picked up a Thingamajig, which is the peanut butter sister to the Whatchamicallit.

What the Peep?!

April 11th, 2009 ; Author - Chocoholism, Entertainment, Food, News

Happy Easter!

Since I’m too old to hunt for Easter eggs (well, to have someone hide them for me), or eat so much chocolate that I don’t sleep for three days, Easter means only one thing - the annual Peep Show contest! (and there isnt only one - they have popped up all over the country). As a person who doesn’t like Peeps, I have to say that this is the best use of their post-apocolyptic survivorable qualities.

This years Washington Post Peep Show Contest winner? A re-imagining of an iconic art piece. But, I have to hand to it to those Washingtonians - they’ve also made the cute, fluffy pseudo marshmallows into survivors of US Airways 1549, inmates at Guantanamo Bay, and baby Chinese gold medalist winners.

Top Five of the Week

March 29th, 2009 ; News

1.    That Sham-Wow guy was just too good to be true. The best part – his real name is Vince Shlomi!
2.    The MTA decided that despite a recession, we still all need to get to work and don’t have time to walk there.
3.    Last night the Empire State went dark for Earth Hour. What? Oh right, I was at home, and do not have view of the Empire State.
4.    When I saw the title for this, I thought it meant “broke-cation” as in “staycation” but without the museums and lunches out. Turns out, its an excuse to hang with Paul Rudd.
5.     Definitely not news – but I kind of want one of these. A glazed donut, peanut butter, bananas and bacon – a delightful heart attack if there ever were one. Now I understand Elvis. However, this burger made me feel a little sick. Sick enough to look up flights to Grand Rapids, MI.

Buñuelos

March 29th, 2009 ; Author - Monika, Food

Years and years ago my cousins moved to El Paso, Texas. I never quite knew why they chose Texas, but OK. I went to visit them once and while I was there I was introduced to these crunchy, sweet cinnamon-y, fried, flour tortilla things - OH MAN. I was told that these lovely little things were called “bunuelos”.
